AZoMs Materials/Engineering RSS News Feed

The AZoM.com (the A to Z of Materials) was formed with the primary aim of increasing the use of Advanced Materials by the engineering and design community worldwide. AZoM has recently implemented an RSS news feed of 10 most current news articles. These articles change on a daily basis and can be found on the front page of the AZoM site.

The ISI Web of Knowledge platform, including Web of Science does currently offer RSS feeds. By setting up any alert (search alters, citation alters, table-of-contents alerts) within the ISI Web of Knowledge environment, users can choose to receive their alerts as RSS feeds.

Information professionals can now take searches performed against any of the ISI Web of Knowledge data and use the data to maintain Web postings of publication activity, citation activity or any other activity in the ISI Web of Knowledge.

This functionality was enabled in July 2006.

Alvin,

You are correct. The list of Highwire Journals that provide RSS feeds is available only after one logs in. These Journals have an 'XML' icon under 'Current Issue Feed' section. I am not sure why the list is not available even before one logs in. Another issue for the publishers to consider which somewhat goes along with the visibility issue that was broughtup earlier.

Thanks very much for pointing this out. Jay

Are ALL Highwire journals are available as RSS feeds? There appear to be many, but I can't say that it includes all journals. Am I wrong? I find some journals on the list that do not appear on the list of titles with RSS feeds.

Hi all,

Randy Reichardt in his blog http://stlq.info has reported a new RSS service by SPIE News. See SPIE Newsroom posted on April 11th, 2006. SPIE is the International Society for Optical Engineering and its SPIE Newsroom covers many disciplines such as Astronomy, Biomedical Optics & Medical Imaging, Nanotechnology and Remote Sensing among many others. As Randy points out, the RSS icon for feeds is somewhat hidden and not clearly visible. One needs to click on the technical community and look for the orange RSS icon at the bottom of the page. The feed provides must make it more visible so that users can take advantage of the features they are providing.

John,

Thanks very much for your comments and question. It appears that not everyone is familar with RSS and how it can help in keeping them abreast of new scientific information. My opinion is based on the scientific community that I am mainly aware of. I tend to ask questions to faculty and students about how much they know about this. In most cases, they were not familar with and even if they knew, they had no idea of what and how much RSS based content is available now through major electronic databases and electronic journals. Last term, during our Biomaterials 1 class, I showed to my students what they can do with feeds from Hubmed, for example. This helped them to find new papers on their topic of research that they were able to include in their final research paper. In that sense, their 'bibliography' is evolving since it can reflect the latest papers. We still need to do considerable outreach and promotion, but I think, as more faculty and students realize this, learn about it, they will begin to add them in their feed readers. I think the immense potential for this in research has yet to be fully realized by the academic and research community. Our blogs, now hosted on the Library server, will be one of the tools to develop faculty and student awareness of RSS feeds. Some are using but many more could be using. Again, individual interest also matters. Just imagine how fast and quickly the new information can be used by researchers in their mission to find innovative ways of problem solutions.

Jay: What a wonderful presentation- thorough and informative. I will be referring colleagues to this for some time.

I have a question. Are you seeing increased awareness by faculty and students regarding RSS? I was talking with someone in publidshing a week or so ago and he said that the awareness of RSS in publishing is widespread and he no longer needs to explain RSS. I wonder, though, if end-users, even those in higher education, are still largely unaware of the technology?

     Thanks!
